The Somali Community Hub at 471B Torrens Road, Woodville.
At the Centre, we provide all community services including Strength for life project for adult males, women support group, youth group sessions, weekend board games for all.
We also intend to equip the centre with computers and PS5 gaming for young people to have fun and also get supported with their homework at all schooling levels.
The Fostering Integration Project
This project was funded by the Australian Government’s Department for Home Affairs.
Project involved providing the community with young employees of the association to provide women and children a conducive environment for discussing their issues and for creating pathways for institutional involvement to resolve their issues. The staff also helped the organisation to draft grant applications intended to secure funding for important projects.
The project also provided support to members of the community with emotional and material support to vulnerable members of the community.
The project has also executed a successful community events that included supporting members of the community to attend local council organised events and also community barbecue in the neighbourhoods to foster diverse communal understanding of each other in their neighbourhood.
In partnership with the City of Charles Sturt Council, this association had a successful Somali cultural night in the context of showcasing the Somali culture for fostering integration.
The fostering integration project also introduced young people to mainstream sports clubs and facilitated tours to AFL and other mainstream Australian sports.
The project has also completed series of tours for elders to country destinations that included Ceduna area to introduce the elderly people to smaller towns in the country so they could potentially consider moving there with their families and it becomes easy to integrate into smaller communities in the country.
Other services
- Women’s tailoring project funded by the department for human services SA. This project trained 100 Somali Australian Women and inspired them to use their skills to start their own tailoring business.
- Young people at risk in their learning context are provided with university graduates and students to support them with their school to improve their potential for success in education.
- Young people are encouraged to participate in programs run by other organisations in addition to Somali Communities council Inc initiated youth projects.
Case management and referral services
The executive team members and appointed individual volunteer roles provide case management in their respective roles for Families, Women, Young people and elderly people to address their wellbeing issues and improve their resilience.
Clients are referred to relevant major institutions and others who know where to go but require support letter are provided with the support letters following assessment interview.
Major events
- Australia day parade – This association inspires members to participate in Australia Day parade every year as part of efforts to improve their sense of belonging to this country
- Somali Independence day celebration – This event is organised for showcasing the Somali Australian identity and for maintaining cultural connection with country of origin. Funding sourced from local, state and federal governments for this event.
- The 2 Eids (Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha) – This association organises celebrations for the community and invite as many mainstream and other diverse religious and cultural groups as possible so they see the peace and religiously positive and generous nature of the Muslims from Somalia living in South Australia.
- The inaugural Somali cultural night started this year 2021.
- Harmony week is another avenue for mobilising the community to engage with the wider community by participating in events in school community context, local and other community and mainstream organisations’s harmony week events and also hold own open community barbecue event at a park for all to attend.
- This Association plans to host Australian Citizenship Day celebration to which all south Australians are welcome. The association will source funding for this as it has very high potential for expediting the communal integration for CALD communities involved.
